about the author
the author
John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California and attended Stanford University but never earned his degree, explaining why Aron chose that school in the novel. Steinbeck himself has two sons, like both sets of children in the novel, who were never able to experience Salinas like Steinbeck did, which is theorized to have been the reason why he used an enormous amount of imagery throughout the novel. Steinbeck's grandfather is also thought to have been the inspiration for the Hamilton family. He dedicated his life to manual labor and writing, creating a deep understanding and appreciation of those who also engage in manual labor that explains the character of Samuel Hamilton.
